Landing on Gran Canaria
Palm trees, warm air, and the view that surprised us on day one.
We came back from Gran Canaria almost a month ago, and I can still feel the warm air on my skin. I look outside now and it is cold again. Winter is just beginning, and we know it will be long, dark, and windy. This holiday came at the perfect moment for us.
We do not fly often. The dogs are the main reason, and I will write about that another time. I missed them at first, but I have to admit that a holiday without dogs has its own kind of freedom. It feels light and easy. But I will leave the dog topic for another day.
At the airport we picked up the car. We had to wait a bit because we misjudged our pick-up time, but it was fine. The girls sat on the pavement, enjoying the warm sun.I could not believe how blue the sky was. After living in Scotland for so long, I sometimes forget that the sky can actually be this colour. Even the airport parking looked beautiful — just because it was full of palm trees. Palms always look lovely to me. They are my second favourite tree, right after the tall Scottish evergreens I see every day.
The warm air felt unreal. We had only just landed, and we were already enjoying it. It is amazing how one short flight can change everything.
Palm trees are my second favourite trees. Maybe because they make everything feel relaxed. We got the car and started driving. The road to our accommodation was interesting. I did not expect Gran Canaria to look so different from Tenerife. I did not know what I expected, but the rocky views surprised me in a good way. I kept watching the landscape change.
Driving on the other side of the road is always a bit stressful at the beginning, mainly the roundabouts. It sounds like I am the one driving, but I am definitely not. I can drive, but I get distracted by views too easily, so it is better when my husband drives. He is also the one who finds all the places for us. He has a real talent for it. There are so many options online that I find it impossible to choose anything. Decisions have never been my strength.
We booked our accommodation late, and someone took our first choice for two nights, so my husband kept searching. What he found turned out to be wonderful. A row of small white houses facing the ocean and the blue sky. It looked a bit like Greece, even though I have never been. Maybe it is because I watched Mamma Mia too many times. But it was beautiful.
We carried the bags inside and the view took my breath away. We do not look for luxury when we book places. We just want it to be clean, comfortable, and something we will remember. The terrace with the ocean right in front of us is something I will not forget. My husband really found a gem this time.It was perfect. Waves hitting the rocks, mountains in the background covered with a light mist. The sunset was one of the nicest I have seen.
We spent the whole evening on the balcony, listening to the waves and talking about what we might do during the week. We did not make a real plan. We only knew we wanted to enjoy the time without the dogs and make the most of it. By the time we went to bed, it already felt like we had been there longer than a day. The first day always sets the tone for the whole holiday, and this one started well.
⭐️Useful Note
If you are curious about the place we stayed, here is the accommodation. It was simple, clean, and the view was beautiful. I am keeping the link here for myself too, in case we go back one day.
